Yay! It’s RDN Day! Have you hugged a dietitian today? Celebrate dietitians everywhere by making one healthier change in your life today.
Today is going to be short and sweet 🙂
Just to give some props to all those hardworking RDNs out there, let’s take a look at what goes on in undergrad (at least, for me).
I started at UK as a pre-med Biology major. I made it through my freshman year with mostly As and a few Bs and then Organic Chemistry II hit and I soon realized that pre-med was not for me. Then I tried out Physical Therapy as a major and followed a local well-known physical therapist for a day. He had me touch a metal knee and I went to the bathroom and threw up. So THEN, I did some soul searching and found Dietetics. It was perfect for me. I would stay in the medical field without having to do surgery, dress wounds or clean up feces 🙂 and I got to look cute in a white lab coat. Win-win.
So once I settled on dietetics, I had some catching up to do. I took 19 credit hours a semester to make sure I would graduate on time (and I did so, with Honors!). Dietetic students don’t only take nutrition classes.
Check out what kind of education we get:
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Organic Chemistry
- Medical Terminology
- Business Management
Then, we take the following Nutrition courses….and I’m sure I’m forgetting a few!
- Food Preparation
- Experimental Foods Lab
- Community Nutrition
- Advanced Nutrition
- Medical Nutrition Therapy I and II
Then during your senior year, you apply for a very competitive internship program. After you get matched, you then have to complete a year-long internship before sitting for the RD exam. It’s a lot of work! So next time you meet an RDN, tell them you know a little something about all the hard work that went into their career 🙂
Here is a look at some serious dietitian humor 🙂
So have a good laugh today to celebrate dietitians everywhere 🙂
